Mount Kilimanjaro Day Hike | Tanzania | (DAY TRIP)

Mount Kilimanjaro is Tanzania’s awe-inspiring icon, but you don’t have to climb it to appreciate its full splendour and the enthralling countryside surrounding it. Our Mount Kilimanjaro Day Hike excursion, Sneak Peek of the Peak Hike, allows you to struggle up the first section of the legendary Marangu Route through a rainforest teeming with wildlife and chattering, curious blue monkeys. Keep an eye out for a colobus or two.

Itinerary:

5:30 AM – Pick-up from Hotel in Moshi/Arusha

  • Your day starts early with a pick-up from your hotel in Moshi or Arusha, where your guide will greet you and brief you on the day’s adventure.
  • After the brief introduction, you will begin the drive to the selected starting point for the hike. Depending on the route chosen, this could take 45 minutes to 1 hour.

6:30 AM – Arrive at Kilimanjaro National Park Gate

  • You’ll arrive at the park gate where you’ll check in with the park authorities and complete any necessary paperwork.
  • Here, you’ll meet your experienced local guide, who will provide safety instructions and a brief orientation on the hike. You’ll also be introduced to your team of porters and assistant guides who will accompany you.

7:00 AM – Start of the Hike

  • The hike begins at the entrance of Kilimanjaro National Park.

    • If you are taking the Marangu Route, your hike will begin at the Marangu Gate (1,830 meters / 6,004 feet). You’ll walk through a beautiful rainforest with a chance to observe various bird species and wildlife like monkeys.

    • If you are taking the Machame Route, your hike will begin at the Machame Gate (1,800 meters / 5,905 feet). You’ll hike through lush forest paths, with the chance to witness diverse plant life and wildlife.

8:00 AM – First Rest Stop

  • After about an hour of hiking, the group will take a short break to catch your breath, hydrate, and enjoy some light snacks.
  • This is also a great opportunity to enjoy the surrounding views of Kilimanjaro’s lower slopes, with glimpses of the iconic forest and diverse plant life.

9:00 AM – Continue the Hike

  • Continue the hike, with the terrain transitioning from lush forest to moorland (depending on the route). The hike will gradually become more challenging, with steeper inclines and varied terrain. Along the way, your guide will share fascinating facts about the flora, fauna, and the mountain’s rich history.

11:00 AM – Reach the First Major Viewpoint (Optional)

  • Depending on the route and pace, you’ll likely reach a viewpoint where you can capture incredible photos of the mountain and surrounding areas.
  • For those on the Marangu Route, this could be the Mandara Hut, at around 2,700 meters (8,858 feet), offering stunning views of the landscape below.
  • For Machame Route hikers, the Machame Camp at approximately 3,000 meters (9,843 feet) provides amazing vistas.

12:00 PM – Picnic Lunch in the Wild

  • The hike will include a relaxing lunch break, where you’ll enjoy a packed lunch amidst the natural beauty of the mountain. It’s an opportunity to refuel, relax, and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere at a scenic spot on the trail.
  • Take some time to soak in the beauty of the surroundings and enjoy your meal.

1:00 PM – Continue Hiking

  • After lunch, the hike continues, with options to increase the pace if everyone feels up to it. The landscape changes as you ascend higher, and the vegetation thins out, revealing stunning views of the valleys below.

2:00 PM – Reach High Altitude Viewpoint

  • Depending on the route, you will reach a higher altitude point on the mountain where the landscape becomes even more dramatic. This is where you’ll be able to admire panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes, including snow-capped peaks (weather permitting).
  • The Marangu Route leads to the Horombo Hut, around 3,700 meters (12,140 feet), where you can see spectacular mountain vistas.
  • The Machame Route may bring you to the Shira Plateau, at approximately 3,900 meters (12,795 feet), where you can marvel at the sweeping views and unique alpine desert environment.

3:00 PM – Begin Descent

  • After taking in the views and reaching your highest point for the day, you’ll begin your descent back to the starting point.
  • The descent is often quicker than the ascent, allowing you to enjoy a different perspective of the forest and landscapes as you make your way back.

5:00 PM – Arrive at the Park Gate

  • You’ll arrive back at the Kilimanjaro National Park gate, where you’ll officially complete your hike for the day.
  • After check-out and any final paperwork, you’ll enjoy a celebratory drink and light snack as a reward for your amazing achievement.

6:00 PM – Return to Hotel

  • Your driver will take you back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha, where you can relax and reflect on the incredible adventure you’ve just experienced.

End of Day Trip

Fitness Level & Requirements:

  • This day hike is suitable for hikers with a moderate level of fitness. While it’s not as challenging as summiting Mount Kilimanjaro, the trail can be strenuous in parts.
  • Prior hiking experience is helpful, but not required.
