Combining a Serengeti and Masai Mara Safari

With endless wildlife abundant savannah, an eclectic mix of luxurious lodges and rustic-luxe camps and the mighty annual migration, the Serengeti in Tanzania and the Masai Mara in Kenya are two of the most iconic game parks in East Africa.

The Annual Migration

Moving across from the north of the Serengeti to the south of the Masai Mara via the treacherous Mara River, the 1.5million strong wildebeest migration makes crossing the border look somewhat easy – apart from the crocodiles that lie in wait. Although both of the National Park’s eco-systems adjoin, it’s recommended only the hardiest of safari goers should try to cross from one to the other on land. It’s a long and arduous trip along bumpy roads, with a border crossing where four-hour delays are the norm – and that’s before you’ve even considered the complexity of inter country rules and swapping vehicles and drivers.

How to Cross the Border

However, there is a route that has become well established, making crossing the border between the Serengeti and the Masai Mara both quick and easy. Take a short 30-minute flight from the Mara to Migori, a small airport near the Tanzanian border where you will be met by our driver and driven to Isibania, only another 30-minutes or so away. Here, the border crossing is simple and hassle-free. Once over, you’ll be met by our Tanzania driver and transported to Tarime, another small airport for your onward flight into the Serengeti. This drive is again around 30 minutes and your flight will be anywhere from one to two hours depending on your final destination within the National Park.

This is all available the other way around too, meaning you can just as easily start in the Serengeti before moving onto the Mara. Either way, you’ll always get the best first row seats to the wildebeest migration, following their natural route whilst residing in some of the most inspiring lodges and camps.
